Are there any good free sites or good books to learn Chinese?
I have decided to take Mandarin Chinese in school. I speak a few other languages with varying degrees of fluency, on a scale of one to ten, ( I am native English speaker), Spanish 8, German 6, French 4, Russian 4, (I can read Cyrillic, not just speak phonetically) and I often pick up books at the library and such to bring my fluency back up to par in these languages. I have always taken foreign language classes where available since I was a kid and was raised in a multicultural household/family. I would like anyone to point me to similar resources where I can get a jump on Mandarin Chinese before I start taking the classes. Does anyone have a good online resource or a list of books that I might want to look for? Please do not edit out any resources from the P.R.C. for ideological reasons – I just want to know how to read and speak it; and if they will offer it for free or cheap I will take it. I just can’t find anything ;p
