Great Firewall Leap Inspired By Aoi Sola
Aoi Sola is a popular Japanese porn star who lives an independent lifestyle. Millions of people that are in China lead lives with significantly less political self-determination or freedom, and many found a way to jump around the Great Firewall so they can do what any freedom-loving person in that same situation would do: visit Aoi Sola’s Twitter page. AOL News reports that as tweeting birds greet the first vertical rays of the sun, Chinese netizens have greeted the dawning concept of online freedom in China with an instruction manual. They are teaching one another how to use virtual private networks and proxy servers to follow Aoi Sola. It seems to be a song of human spirit, right? The most obvious question now is “Who will play Sola in the Chinese after-school special?” and will payday loans be necessary to finance such a landmark film?
What is the Great Firewall and what does it have to do with Aoi Sola?
The Great Firewall that so many Aoi Sola fans gotten around is essentially the Chinese government’s collective efforts to censor online content within the country, particularly that which is critical of the government or brings human rights violations out. The Communist nation blocks websites such as www.greatfirewallofchina.org that show which IPs are blocked. As it happens, Twitter is one of the major sites blocked in China, so Chinese fans of Aoi Sola had to take action, as Sola has begun tweeting. They then distributed software and instructions that showed one another how to create virtual private networks (VPN) and how to use proxy servers. This flood of traffic made Aoi Sola to wonder, “What sparked so much discussion about me by Chinese people? What happened? Please tell me.” reports the Dongguan Times.
What a teaser that Aoi Sola
Americans are well aware of how celebrities use Twitter to fan the flames of their popularity, but such folly is quite new to China. Josephine Ho of the Center for the Study of Sexualities at Taiwan’s National Central University speculated to Dongguan that the intense interest in Aoi Sola by Chinese fans was a backlash against tight sexual controls instituted by China’s government. Basically, you can’t keep someone down on the farm forever, or they’ll boil over. Japanese porn is everywhere and wildly liberal, and the newness of it all appeals to Chinese people who are curious about it. Enter Aoi Sola, cue the wild attempts to jump the Great Firewall. Even if you go to money lenders to try and afford the biggest one ever, trampolines just won’t cut it.
And so what does Aoi Sola tweet then?
The answer is nothing different from an average American celebrity. Aoi Sola has more than 54,000 followers, and all of them are enjoying such profound tweets as “Listen!! I bought [an] i pad !! yeah! yeah!” Ever the savvy marketer, Sola tweets in Japanese and English, according to AOL News. On her blog (NSFW), Aoi Sola writes that she seems to be working on learning Chinese, but it’s a tough language to pick up.
