Which is better to learn, a Soroban abacus, or a Chinese abacus? Are there different advantages between them?
Well, the Chinese abacus seems suited to defined applications as well as general ones where the Soroban is strictly decimal so traditional sources of input information would need conversion to decimal before use which might slow an average user down.
Also, the beads are easier to move and to reset than the pegs and so lend themselves to faster manipulation.
On the other hand, most things are decimal nowadays. Also, the pegs resist losing information requiring restarts better than the easy sliding beads do. So, while easier to reset, it is also harder to keep accurate with any amount of agitation.
So consider the situations in which you would use it. In the field perhaps? On a bus? In a restaurant auditing records? On a desk? What will be the inputs for your regular calculations and are they in traditional units or decimalized? Those seem to be the biggest concerns.
Might also consider how horrified one’s family might be if you have a family from one tradition or the other and you pick the opposite…
