Asian culture hugely influenced the series. It is inspired by Eastern arts, history, tradition, and mythology. Chinese calligraphy styles were used nearly in all the writings in the show. Religions such as Hinduism, Taoism, and Buddhism were also enthused. The fighting sequences were also based on Asian fighting styles. The animation was also a combination of Japanese anime and US-style cartoons.

In the world of The Last Airbender, our world is divided into four nations: Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. And each of these nations, an order called Benders exists that has the ability to “bend” or manipulate the element of their nation. Water Tribes have Waterbenders, Earth Kingdom has Earthbenders, Air Nomads have Airbenders, and Fire Nation has Firebenders. But only an entity known as the Avatar has the ability to control all of the four elements. He also has the unique ability called Avatar State which gives him the knowledge of all the past Avatars. The Avatar is the physical embodiment of the world. It is his duty to maintain balance and order with the four nations.

But it has been ages since the world has an Avatar. The Fire Nation is now trying to control over the three nations. They have started to wage a brutal battle and the world’s only hope rests on a reluctant hero named Aang. Aang is considered to be the last Airbender of the Air Nomads. He is also said to be the latest incarnation of the Avatar. But he prefers living a carefree life and go on adventures rather than saving the world. He later realizes that he must fulfill his destiny to bring peace back to the world. He then travels to the North Pole along with Katara, the last Waterbender, and her warrior brother Sokka, to learn and improve on his skills. But they are being chased by the Fire Nation’s banished Prince Zuko and Fire nation Admiral Zhao. Zuko, son of the Fire Lord Ozai, is trying to capture the Avatar because he believes that this is the only way he can regain his honor.

The movie was first filmed in 2D. But following the success of Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland which have been huge in the box office, The Last Airbender will also be converted to 3D. Studio D LLC, which also did some work on Avatar, has showed some converted scenes to director M. Night Shyamalan and seemed to like the result. The conversion will cost between $5 to 10 million, adding to the reported $100 million that has already gone to the production of the movie.

This action adventure fantasy will film will be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Aang will be played by Noah Ringer. The other cast members include Nicola Peltz as Katara, Jackson Rathbone as Sokka, Dev Patel as Prince Zuko, Cliff Curtis as Fire Lord Ozai, and Aasif Mandvi as Admiral Zhao.
