Massacre of Chinese in America’s past?
I have often read about how the Native Americans and African Americans were treated in this nation’s past. I have also read about how Japanese-Americans were put into camps during WWII. Yet, I have come to learn a lot about my own Chinese-American past too. I was on a trip to Stockton, CA and retraced the footsteps of my grandfather’s arrival to this nation more than 90 years ago. I read about stories of how they built the railways of the western states and got thanked for it in the form of massacres, being driven out of rail and mining towns once the railroads were completed. All due to racial hysteria. In 1885, over 30 Chinese were massacred in Rock Springs, Wyoming. In 1887, there is an area that is now called Chinese Massacre Cove in Oregon state where 31 Chinese men were robbed, murdered and mutilated. In 1871, 23 Chinese were killed in mob violence in the city we now call Los Angeles.
I don’t dwell on the past, but it is not something I can forget either.
