What should I major in if I’d like to become a Sports Medicine doctor?
I am going into my senior year of high school and recently I’ve been looking at colleges and majors that fit my needs. I am extremely passionate about athletics and I am a very outgoing and gregarious individual. I would like to pursue a career involving sports and physical activity because I myself am an athlete who likes to stay fit and healthy. As of now I see myself going to medical school to become a Sports Medicine Physician. What kind of major should I be looking at for high school? I’ve come across Kinesiology, Exercise Science, and Biology. Would one of these be my best bet? I’m looking at universities on the east coast (Massachusetts, PA, NY etc.). What are some good universities that offer any of the majors I’m interested in? I am also living in Taiwan right now with my family and have been fortunate enough to learn some mandarin chinese. Is it smart to continue learning Chinese throughout college? Is a second language something that will look good for med school?
I can’t help with all of your questions, but some are up my alley.
We’ve sent students off to medical school from just about every major you can think of, from anthropology and biology to business, art, and music. So of course you can major in anything you like. That said, given your interests I would suggest you make sure that you find a very good exercise science department before pursuing one of those majors (ES or Kinesiology). Some are wonderful, but others have created such restrictive course loads for their students that it becomes very difficult to squeeze the biology and chemistry needed into your load in the appropriate time frame. Basically, ask the folks in that Department whether they’ve had much success sending students to medical school.
Chinese…? Well, with over 1.4 billion Chinese in the world, it’s never going to hurt, right? That said, with the application process what matters is relevance. Chinese may be worth your time if you’re hoping to practice in certain parts of the US with high concentrations of Chinese-Americans, or if you’re hoping to do work overseas (e.g., in the military healt services units). So it’s a matter of connecting your interests so that they’re coherent at the time of your med school applications. Good luck! …sounds like you’re off to a great start!
