Learning Chinese in China: a Whole World Apart

If you want to learn Chinese, the one way that you can do so is in China. There are many different dialects of Chinese that you can learn. When you learn Chinese in China, you will learn from the area where you stay.

Bracing Yourself for a Whole Different World

Learning Chinese from English can be difficult – more so than learning other languages. The reason for this is that you do not have the luxury of translating with a book. The alphabet is different in Chinese. The first thing that you need to learn if you are going to learn this language is the alphabet. Once you learn the Chinese alphabet, you can start recognizing words.

It is best for you to take some classes in Chinese before you decide to embark on a trip to China to learn Chinese. You can take a few classes at your local community college or even online. You should have some sort of a head start when you want to learn Chinese, before you actually get to China.

Deciding the Dialect

Before you start learning Chinese, be sure that you know which part of China you will be visiting so that you can learn that particular dialect. For example, if you are planning on visiting Hong Kong, you will want to learn Cantonese, as this is the dialect that is spoken in this part of China the most.

Once you are ready for your trip, be sure to bring any learning materials with you. Many people in the major cities in China speak English, although those on the outskirts of town do not. Chances are that you will have no choice but to learn to speak Chinese if you travel outside of the major cities in China. You may rely on a guide to speak for you, but you should try to master this skill yourself.

After you have learned a few words in Chinese and have picked up the alphabet, you will be able to start to communicate in Chinese to others. Although your language will be rusty at first, you will soon get the hang of it. Chinese is not a difficult language to master, once you select a dialect and learn the alphabet. As soon as you pick up the concept of the language, you will then be able to pick up an increasing number of words. The more you force yourself to speak Chinese, the better off you will be. You will find that it becomes easier to communicate in this language the more you use it.

Out of Sight; Out of Mind

Once you return from your trip to China, you should use Chinese as often as possible so that you can retain the language. If you do not use a language, you will lose it – even if it the native tongue that you were taught to speak when you were a child. If you want to continue to converse in Chinese, then you will have to make it a point to engage others in conversations in the Chinese language, even after you return from your trip to China.
